Chris graduated from the University of Manchester in 2010 with an MEng degree in Aerospace Engineering. In September of the same year he joined the Advanced Metallic Systems Doctoral Training Centre (DTC); a collaboration between The Universities of Manchester and Sheffield. Chris’ original project was to characterise the microstructure that formed in titanium alloys during Electron beam (EBM) Additive manufacture. It was envisioned that the microstructure (and hence the mechanical properties) could be controlled to a certain degree by modifying the process parameters and the alloy chemistry.
However being more excited with the potential applications of Additive Manufacturing, especially with regard to manufacturing complex shapes, Chris changed his project to investigating the design of least weight structures for EBM manufacture. Chris is based in both the CMD group and the Innovative Metals Processing Centre (IMPC) in the Material Science and Engineering Department at Sheffield University.
